Swiss Regiments WSS

Post by Captain of Dragoons » Sun Sep 30, 2012 7:00 pm

Wondering what colour Swiss regiments in Confederate pay wore? I know those in French dressed in red.

Strange that they fought for both sides. I know that in 1400/1500 if they were across each other on a battlefield they would not / try to avoid fighting each other. No such practice in the WSS. Were they divided among religious line: Catholic Swiss regiments in French service and Protestant Swiss regiments in Confederate Pay.

According to de Wilde in "De Tinnen Tafelronde", 1974, vol 4, the Swiss in the States' Service, were usually dressed in blue, lined with red. An exeception was the Regiment Lochman, that was dressed in blue lined with yellow in 1695.

I have found a very nice article and detailed article on all of the the Swiss Regiments in the States' service, in the dutch genealogy magazine "Gens Nostra", 1988 by Rob Murray Bakker Albach. Swiss service started in 1598 when the States took over 4 Swiss companies from the French. (!) Up to 1685 religion was hardly a matter when hiring the Swiss, but the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, led to an outrage in the Swiss Kantons as well, making service in the States' Army a lot easier.

8 regiments during the WSS in dutch service.

Hows your French?

Blue coats and red cuffs seem to be it for most of 18th c. Lochman in red coats?

also check this Dutch site

http://www.milwiki.nl/dutchregiments/in ... REP-RegInf

sorry both sites more on the history and not the uniforms, although the above site has uniforms for the later periods.

Not come across any occasions when the French Swiss and Dutch Swiss clashed, must have been close in a few actions.
