Scots Army of 1690...

Post by Russian James » Sun Oct 21, 2012 4:13 pm

A brief description of the setting for my models, the Order of Battle, and eventually, photos of the finished units.

I have tried to include uniform info where known, but am the first to admit I'm new to this period and learning rapidly from the forum members. If anyone can share on the missing information, I'd be most grateful...

The ‘alternative history’ which is the basis for my Scots Jacobite army of 1690 relies on three very simple twists of fate…

i) Viscount Dundee survived the Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689

ii) Dundee continued with the Royal army to Dunkeld and defeated the Cameronians.

iii) James overruled his advisors and reinforced Scotland in 1690 as he intended.

The story so far:

In late 1689 / early 1690 an Assembly of the highland Jacobite chiefs, lowland sympathisers and those leaders from Buchan, Angus and Gordon who had fought with John Graham, Viscount Dundee along with His Grace agreed that James should base himself in Scotland in the hope that having such a strong, loyal, foundation in the north would encourage the large numbers of sympathisers in the south and east to declare their loyalty and provide a core to attract those Scottish regiments which had defected to William back to the true King prior to invading England to regain the other throne

A condition of this was that James had to use the Lion Rampant as the Royal Standard, although he could use both the Lion Rampant and the combined arms* as his personal standards. All regiments would be reissued with new colonel’s colours consisting of a Saltire with ‘J VII R’ beneath a crown. Regimental colours would retain the old design, but on a Saltire instead of the red cross of St. George on white.

*the combined arms used would the Scottish version with the Lion Rampant in the 1st & 4th quarters.

French regiments on loan / hire to the King would retain their own colours.
Irish regiments fighting in Scotland under James would use the red St. Patrick’s cross on white with their original device as a reward for their loyalty.
English regiments retain the red St. George's cross, but with ‘J II R’.

The Highland clans fight under their own standards, even (especially?) when grouped with other clans to bring them up to approx. battalion strength. Some clans still carry tattered old Saltires from earlier conflicts.

Army List

C-in-C His Grace, James VII & II

Scots

Divisional Commander ?

Brigade Commander ?

Kings Scots Footguards
Colonel Hon. James Douglas
Red coats, white facings, tin buttons, white breeches and stockings, fur caps for grenadiers

No historical evidence they attempted to remain loyal to James, but can’t have my sovereign without his Guards, can I?

Royal Scots
Red coats, white facings, grey breeches and stockings, tin buttons, fur caps for grenadiers

Mutinied and disarmed in 1689 for remaining loyal to James. Lt. Col Sir Robert Douglas suspended in December 1688 for refusing to acknowledge Schomberg as Colonel.
Assumed Douglas led the Regt. to Scotland.

Brigade Commander ?

Royal Scots Fusiliers
Col [edit] Thomas Buchan
Red coats, red facings, grey breeches and stockings, brass buttons, fur caps

No evidence these ever wavered in their loyalty to William, but assumed that as other Regts. have returned to James, they have followed...

Wauchopes
Col John Wauchope
Red coats, yellow facings,

Raised by James from ex-members of the Scots Brigade who left Dutch service. Approx. one third of officers remained loyal to James - assumed they ‘converted’ the rest of the Regt.

Brigade Commander ?

Scots Militia
Red coats, white facings, probably tin buttons, blue bonnets

Divisional Commander John Graham, Bonnie Dundee

Brigade Commander Locheil

Clan Cameron
Clan Fraser & Chisholm

Brigade Commander MacLean of Duart

Clan MacLean
Clan MacDonald of Sleat

Divisional Commander ?

Brigade Commander ?

King’s Lifeguards
Red coats, white facings (officers red), blue breeches, brass buttons, blue housings

Prior to the Union did not attend the sovereign outside Scotland. Assumed that with James’ arrival in Scotland they would remain loyal...

Royal (Scots) Regiment of Horse (Claverhouse’s)
Red coats, yellow facings, buff breeches, brass buttons, red housings. ‘trumpeters and kettledrummers to wear James’ own livery’ - assume reversed colours.

Marched into England in 1688 to oppose William, disbanded early 1689. Assumed made it’s way back to Scotland in ’88.

Royal Regiment of Scots Dragoons (the Grey Dragoons; Scots Greys)
Col Sir Thomas Livingstone
Grey coats, white facings, tin buttons, blue bonnets

Regiment known to have made several attempts to join James during 1688/89, assumed succeeded at some point!

Hi Jim,

This looks really interesting.

Quick question, is the Ramsays regiment that you have in the Irish brigade, meant to have come across from the Scots Dutch brigade or is it a completely different Ramsays?

Cheers

Gerry
You may call it sarcasm........I, on the other hand, prefer to refer to it as a humorous observation!!! :-)

Doubt it, there was supposed to have been an Irish brigade sent to Scotland in 1688 under Ramsay but siege of 'derry intervened...

I assumed he was an Irishman but have no further info. Lets see if anyone else comes up with the goodies.

This 'irish' Ramsay is probably Robert Ramsey (spelled with an 'e'). He took command of Sir Thomas Newcomen's Regiment of Foot about March 1689. This regiment was one of the regiments part of the Irish army prior to 1688, and was formed from independent companies in 1684 (like the future 18th Foot / Royal Irish). Henry FitzJames, the Lord Grand Prior, succeeded Ramsey in April 1689.

If you have the Royal Scots Fusiliers in James's army, I would have Thomas Buchan as colonel. He was removed by William, replaced by O'Farrell, and I think he crossed the channel to be close to James. Buchan seemed a more staunch Jacobite in that sense :-) Furthermore, they converted to fusiliers probably only in the early 1690s.

Hope this helps,

Wienand

Buchan noted and edited above...

Did he then become the Major General Thomas Buchan who James sent to Scotland?

First use of title of Fusiliers in 1691, but possibly converted to this role in 1686 when 500 firelocks were ordered.

As always in this period (and others) nothing is as definitive as we modellers would like... :(

I like this concept Jim. As you know I am partial to alternative histories!

The Scots army will look mighty fine. I hope to put up pix of my own Cameronians using the apostle equipped figures very soon.

Those should be nice Barry, I'll be using the apostle equipped figures for my Scots Militia unit.

I can't use Cameronians as they were violently anti-James

Ray (Churchill), although it is obviously an alternative histories army, I AM trying to keep things to a more plausible aspect of the 'what ifs?'...

Cameronians I could not and would not attempt to justify in the army, however, the Grey Dragoons did appear to make several attempts to change to James' side, unfortunately without success.

What I desperately need is some justification for including English or Irish cavalry as I am very short on mounted units. :(

Would you two please take your squabbles elsewhere!

This was supposed to be a (semi-) serious thread...
