Regiment Bois D'avid, Luneburg-Zell

Post by Hastati » Sun Jun 09, 2013 10:20 am

Does anyone have any info on a possible flag for this regiment. They are going to be part of my Anglo-Dutch army, but I am coming up "null points" on my google fu regarding them (other than Colonel Bois d'avid being a Huguenot refugee).

If you search for Bois here you'll find some pointers perhaps:

just had a look at my copy of august Kuhn the hanovarian army during the war of spanish succession . he list's infantry colonels for the hanovarian infantry going back to 1692 and i'm afraid I can't find the regiment you are looking for . mind you in my personal opinion the book is dubious at best

Regiment zu pferde 3CB has oberst Boisdavid in 1705, this was a Celle'isch regiment, my scant information has him as a GzM and dead in 1706.

however I am currently working on the regimental colonels and this is one of the few regiments I haven't looked at yet, should have a bit more later this week.

sorry just had another look at the book should try and to two thing's at once . if you have the Kuhn book the description seem's to be the st laurent regiment 's standard . on page 16 there are illustrations of both the squadron and lieb standard but doesn't have a written description of the standards . the squadron standard appears to be the same as the st Laurent but with out the motto parta tueri
the squadron standard has a thistle in each corner two reef's in the center one outside one inside a crown and a cl monogram under the crown the lieb standard was white squadron standards possibly red.sorry for the confusion on my part.

Thanks for the info gents, much appreciated. I know that a Luneburg-Zell infantry regiment was one of the regiments that came up and helped hold off the French at Steenkirk for a bit and I was going to use this one for that role.

Google does tell me that Glozier in his book on Huguenot soldiers says that Bois D'avid was the Colonel of the 1st IR of Brunswick-Luneburg-Zell. It may well be that Bois D'avid was no longer the Colonel by 1692/93.

As promised I have some more information

Generalfeldzeugmeister Simon, marquis de Boisdavid (or you may prefer Bois d'Avid)

colonel of Regiment zu pferde 3CB 1693-1705 (the Ortenberg book does not include earlier colonels)

also previously

colonel of Regiment zu fuss 2A 1684-1693 which indeed is the regiment at Steenkirk, it lost heavily and had 200 mann afterwards.

Both regiments were from the Duchy of Celle so may have very different colours to the later one's, however it wouldn't hurt to use later flags if that is all you have.

it is strange I was looking this guy up the day before your post, but hadn't gotten to him at that point, I'll post some more about him/regiment if I see some more.

The information below is taken from August Kühn's “The Subsidy-, Imperial- and House-Soldiers of the Elector George Louis of Hanover-Calenberg and of Duke George William of Lüneburg-Celle, later united in the Army of the ELECTORATE OF HANOVER”. I believe a copy can be purchased from Caliver Books.

Uniform:white coat, cuffs and linings green, waistcoat
straw-yellow, stockings, hat border, and neckcloth white, tin
buttons

Colours for de Luc (2A), but quite possible for Boisdavid (2A)

Colonel's colour: light green with red middle-field thereon a
white, springing horse, surrounded by a silver laurel wreath and
with silver ornaments in the four corners.

Company colour: light green, in the middle surrounded by a silver
laurel wreath an armoured arm coming out of grey clouds with a
silver sword in the hand upon it in black letters the word
"VICTORIA", above it on a white scroll in black lettering "SI
DEUS PRO NOBIS QUIS CONTRA NOS".

Hope this helps

Ray,

I could be wrong, but I believe both Guard battalions were Hannoverian.

would you have a list of hanovarian infantry coulors during the war of spanish succession or are you just going by the Kuhn book. the reason i'm asking is because some of the colour's seem to be the same as hanovarian colours of the seven years war. would you have any other information on the subject.

I guessed the two Garde Btns were both from Hanover, but different states within Hanover.
Would this mean they were uniformed the same and carry the same standards.
In Kuhn's work it says the Leib Infantry Regiment for rank & file wear a Red coat, vest; Black cuff's and lining; White stockings; Yellow hat edge and buttonholes; Buff breeches; Brass buttons.
Regimental standard of white field with silver horse and red central field, surrounded by a golden laurel crown and four electoral crowns in the four corners.
To me the flag discription sounds as if it dates from George I or even later SYW.
When does the Hanoverian horse first appear on flags?

Cheers,

Ray.
there seem's to be quiet a few infantry standards in the Kuhn book which seem to be from the seven years war period. wondering if any one has any info apart from Kuhn on hanoverian standards of the wss.
