Colours for Regiments 1693 ish!

Post by Bitbag » Sun Jun 23, 2013 10:25 pm

Hi all - just a quickie
I was wondering if there was any consensus/ideas/suggestions on the designs of regimental colours for the English/Scots regiments serving at Landen (Neerwinden) in 1693?

I've got one or two sources - the Osprey book somewhere, (all our stuff has been in storage), and I picked up a copy of the 'History of the Uniforms of the British Army Vol.1" by Cecil C.P. Lawson, some months ago in a local bookshop (as you do... ), which has details for colours for most of the older establishment regiments from between 1685-1687ish.

However, I wondered if these colours would still be suitable - if there was much change in design/colonels etc in the intervening 8 years or so, to Landen. I want to build up 'British' forces - ie. maybe 6 or so English and Scots regiments, for 'what if' engagements based around that particular campaign.

Any help/advice will be most gratefully accepted - and yes, I've STILL got to get in touch with Wargames Illustrated about that Mark Allen article CD, if that's going to help me any way - it's on my to do list

Cheers

Thanks Dave for pointing me to Clarence's flags - not thought of that one!

Only thing is, I'll have to get my head round which regiment was which, for Landen (Neerwinden), and have a proper loook. My impression from Wikipedia, is that the following regiments were there:

1st Foot Gds, 2nd Foot Guards, 'Scots Guards', 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 7th, 14th, 16th, 19th, 21st, 25th and 26th Regiments. (That's probably wrong though!)

I think I've got a reasonable handle on the French forces, and can build up some of those.

My idea is to build up around 6 regiments of the English/Scots forces there, maybe one of the Guards units, and the 7th (Fusiliers), then another 4 regiments or so. So I'm trying to get my head round the colonels, and then see if there'd be any continuity in terms of standards etc. Are the flags for sale in the shop only suitable for the Boyne and Aughrim?

Any help once again is gratefully accepted!

The Royal Fusileers (7th Foot) had a rather splendid Trophy of Arms on both colours, which I await Clarence to create... (the successor Regiment I spent some time in playing part time soldiers)

Working on GNW Saxons and Swedes at the moment, but I intend to revisit many of the 1690 units to make the later flags available as well!

Just FYI and unit planning, I always plan my flag making around a battle so the first Swedish release will be units that fought at Poltova in 1709. Even more specifically I start with units that were actually engaged in the fighting so battalions lurking around the back might not be covered in the initial wave...

Currently working on Saxon dragoons and cuirassiers, but I hope to finish them next week. I should have the first Swedish wave of foot by the end of the July, give or take a week...

clarance sorry to bother you again but will you be including the sodermanland and kronoberg regiments in you swedish infantry release's. as they were in the siege work's and didn't take part in the actualy main battle . so i hope that you arn't going to class them as lurking units.
