Musicians uiform of the 1st Guard Regiment - Help

Post by Belg » Tue Oct 15, 2013 9:40 am

Hello,
I started painting miniatures that are supposed to represent the soldiers of the 1st Guard Regiment at the time of the Battle of Blenheim.
To paint them as accurately as possible, I did some research in the net and I found some images. But, from them, some doubts have arisen about the color of the uniform of the drummer and piper.
In the two following images the musicians have the same uniform of the troops:

But in this site, the miniatures of the musicians were painted with the "inverted colors":

Which of the two versions is it the correct one?
The uniform of the Guard Musicians was not the "inverse color" like those of other regiments, but instead it had the same colors that of the troop?
Thanks to those who can "enlighten" me.
regards,

Sergio

Unfortunately the person who painted these did not include drummers for them.
Your drummers in reverse coats are wrong and should be in Scarlet Red coats & breeches, Blue facings (cuffs), Black hat & shoes, Yellow/Gold hoops running down each arm to the cuff, hat border/lace and pocket borders, Brass/Gold buttons, White stockings/gaiters and the hat was topped with white feathers.

Drum's were blue with red rim's top and bottom, white ropes knotted from top to bottom.
On the drum was painted a shield with the royal coat of arms and above this a gold and red crown.

Hope this helps,

Ray.
Hi Churchill,
many thanks for your reply and very useful explanations.
As usual, you are always very friendly and helpful.
The image that you put, I had already seen in the excellent topic you have devoted to the Battle of Blenheim, but as you pointed out yourself, in the your Unity of the Guards there are no musicians.
Then I will follow your advice to paint the musicians of my 1st Guard Regiment.
Regards,
Sergio

I'll just add this from Lawson vol 1 pg. 25

Court musicians as well as those of the Household troops wore the Royal livery of scarlet faced with blue and laced with gold, he also describes a drum-major of the 1st Guards in 1713 crimson coat lined blue serge .... and a lot more details.
There is also a black & white drawing of foot Guard musicians in 1688 wearing quite fancy outfits on pg. 27.

interesting discussion here about drummers & musicians generally
