Ansbach regiment Castell

Hi all,

I am looking for details of the Ansbach regiment called Castell in some orbats for Ramilles. I think it might have been Seckendorf previously and didn't actually become Castell until later.

Looking for help with uniform and flags. Especially if it looks anything like Heidbrecht as I have that spare.

Thanks.

I only have two Ansbach units in my obat for Ramillies. The foot unit I have listed as Jung-Seckendorff. I can't find any notes beyond a note I have that says blue with carmine facings. Not sure where I got that. Hall doesn't make a plate for them.

The other Ansbach unit I have is the Schmettau dragoons and Hall does make a plate.

Thanks footslogger, I knew of the dragoons being there. There were only two ansbach infantry regiments raised both called seckendorf at some point so it is confusing.

heidebrecht was at Blenhiem but I think that isn't the same unit that was at Ramilles. Could be wrong though.

All the contemporary lists give Jung-Seckendorff (or jongh or senck) at Ramillies in the second line. Jung implies there was an Alt-Seckendorff at this time also. (plus the dragoons as you stated)

Anspach Regiment in the Dutch service

Lt-Colonel Janus von Eberstädt
1703 von Heydebracht
1705 von Seckendorff
1711 von Cavenach

But then implies Janus (later Heydebracht) and Seckendorff were different regiments but were combined into one for Dutch service.

Information is confused but Cavenach in 1713 (suggests maybe earlier as well) had dark blue coat (Indigo) with crimson-red cuffs, lining and waistcoat, tin metal buttons, light leather breechs.
White-grey stockings, black neck cloth, hat with white border, drummers in reversed colours.
Officers with orange sashes (Dutch service)

There were other units like the grenadier btn Castelli

These were house troops, they also had a Reichs contingent.

More information in “Material on the war of the Spanish succession book II” – The armies of Imperial circles of Swabia and Franconia as well as the Bishopric of Würzburg and the margraviate of Anspach by August Kuhn. 1989. Pg. 23

Lots of details but reads like Pengal and Hurt, perhaps he was confused on the different regiments too.

Dan Schorr and Pat Condray translated the original, maybe they can explain more.

Brandenburg-Ansbach provided two infantry regiments to the Dutch.

• The first was IR Seckendorff (Johann Philip von Seckendorff), 1708 Castel. Maintained by Gelderland

• The second was IR Janus von Eberstadt, 1703 Heidenbreck, 1705 Seckendorff (Heinrich von Seckendorff) (Jung-Seckendorff), 1711 Cavenach. Maintained by Holland.

The OOBs for Ramillies that I am familiar with only show the second, Jung-Seckendorff, as present. I would be interested in seeing the OOBs that list the first, Castel, as present.

As Mark has pointed out, the only uniform information available is that for Cavenach, which might apply for the regiment at Ramillies. There is also information available on the flags for Cavenach. If you drop me a message with your email address, I’ll send you a copy of it.

Kühn’s statement that the two regiments were counted as one in Dutch service is curious. I have not seen any other evidence to support this, and Kühn does not provide any further information.

Finally, to further add to the confusion the Lieutenant Colonel of Dragon Regiment Schmettau was Friedrich Heinrich von Seckendorff.

Regards,

Dan

Thanks for the info guys. The oob that mentioned castel was one used for the war flag big game so don't know the actual source, though it does give thanks to Iain Stanford. It doesn't mention seckendorf so I'm assuming that it has just been switched.

I will go with the same heidebrecht flag for seckendorf then
