Sources on terrain in Spanish Netherlands?

Post by Justin Penwith » Fri Apr 11, 2014 2:26 pm

I am looking for good sources on terrain in the Spanish Netherlands and United Provinces, ones with images, and am soliciting suggestions from the informed folks here.

Essentially, I would like to see some nice line drawings, or paintings if that is all there is, of what city and rural buildings looked like, the associated walls and fencing, trees and shrubs, etc.

Yes, I am hoping to get working on terrain for the period, this summer, and need to have a good idea of how things would have appeared.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,
You may find here historical maps of Europe and also quite a list of sites where you can gather informations about them:

http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/map_site ... tml#europe

If you are more interested in the look of areas where certain battles took place you may find informations at the Marburg Digital Archive:

http://pdf.digam.net/?str=177

When searching through those hundreds of pictures and maps you may find something like this

http://www.digam.net/?dok=2524

Hope that helps.
Cheers,
Günter.

I'm Flemish and live on the Dutch/Belgian border near the old fortified town of Hulst. There are still a fair number of fortified places around here, but if it's landscape you're after, google "Nederlandse schilders 17de eeuw landschap" or "Vlaamse schilders 17de eeuw landschap" (= Dutch or Flemish painters 17th century landscape) and look at pictures instead of web. You'll have plenty to choose from!

In my humble view, one of the best works is the so-called Atlas Schoenmaker, made by two travellers in the Low Countries.

Another great source is the picture archive of the dutch national museum in Amsterdam, the Rijksmuseum..

This search request gave a result of more than 6000 pics :D
