Hi,

Just wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction from finding out the uniforms of British artillery during the War of Spanish Succession?

Can't seem to find anything from internet search apart from a reference to them being blue? I think I recall "Churchill" posting pictures of his painted red?

Helpful? Superb! Thanks very much Ray :D

I take it these uniforms also apply to the smaller battalion guns as well?

Hello again,

There was no such thing as battalion guns for this period meaning that the artillery did not move forward with the infantry.
There were Light gun's at Blenheim 24 x 3pdrs (16 of which were from the English train), but these were spread over the entire allied frontage stretching from Blenheim on the left flank to Lutzingen on the right.
Colonel Holcroft Blood commanding the artillery also had a battery of 10 x 5pdr Sakers & 4 x 5.5" Howitzers supporting Lord Cutts who was to assault Blenheim village and a battery of 6 x 9pdr Culverins supporting the Oberglauheim assault in the centre.
The battle did not start until mid day and at about 4.30pm Blood was ordered to manhandle some of his artillery to the centre prior to Marlborough's cavalry attack. My guessing is this would have been his light guns only as the gun's (even the light ones) were mounted on heavy carriages.
During this period once artillery were positioned they usually stayed there until the end of the battle.

Cheers,

Ray.
