I came across the below ref from : Tincey, John; Embleton, Gerry (1994). The British Army 1660-1704.
John Evelyn, in his Diary entry for 5 December 1683, described the appearance of the horse grenadiers:

"The King had now augmented his guards with a new sort of dragoons, who carried also granados, and were habited after the Polish manner, with long picked caps, very fierce and fantastical."
Would anybody hazard a guess what is meant by "Long Picked Caps"?

cheers
Edward

C.C.P.Lawson calls up the same quote, except 'long peaked caps'.
No explanation of what type this is, but says the 'Polish manner' means a long skirted coat.
What hats did Polish Dragoons wear ?? My Osprey book shows them in c. 1683 in cloth caps with a turned up fur lining.

Hello Cliff,

I'm thinking ref your remarks above in cloth caps with turned up fur lining being in the style of the Dutch Guards grenadier hats or Louis XIV's Maison du Roi's Horse Grenadiers.

" in the style of ... Louis XIV's Maison du Roi's Horse Grenadiers "

Quite so. Their hats do look a bit fierce. :)
