Grand Prior Grenadier Caps

Post by Mulciber » Sat Aug 22, 2015 7:35 am

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone here can point me at information about the colours for grenadier caps for the Lord Grand Prior's Regiment or give me a best guess at it.
Suggestions for sash colours would also be appreciated.
Thanks.

There's no actual right or wrong answer to the question, I'm afraid. I painted my unit with white cuffs, so therefore the front of their cap was white, I did try and paint the burning town on the front, but as they were 15's it was quite difficult.
What colour have you painted your units cuffs??

Thanks Ray,

Both yours and Clarence's unit pictures are what I'm using generally as well as the BLB Rulebook pictures, so the cuffs are white.

I wasn't sure whether to do a more or less white body to the grenadier cap and have a red "bag" to it with a white pom-pom (please excuse the lack of precise military terminology here!)

Any suggestion for officer/ensign sashes?

Thanks again,

Toby

I did mine in the normal English dark red colour mainly because they were commanded by Henry Fitzjames, the illegitimate son of King James. So you'd think they'd dress as a normal English unit.

Thanks again, Ray.
Found the Partizan Press booklet of James II's Army, that has helped too.

The Mark Allen plates show the white front with the burning town - red bag I think

What we know of the regiment's uniform comes from a entry in John Stevens' journal
The Lord Grand Prior's Regiment, thirteen companies
... Clothed in red lined white, all but the drums, who are blue with white and [? ] loops. The Grenadier's white and red loops, their caps with a flaming a city, and this motto. The fruits of Rebellion. The colonel's colours white, the other two with the same device and motto as the Grenadiers' caps.

Interpret that as you will.
In fact most of what we know of Jacobite uniforms comes from the entry made shortly before the Boyne, while the army was encamped. Before he could list more than a few the army got orders to move off again. A pity fate didn't allow more time for notes.

Thanks gents, that's greatly appreciated.
The burning town might be a challenge to do on the cap fronts.
Cheers,

I've put a couple of photos on the Face book War of the Grand Alliance page, after I tried to put the photos on here for about half an hour...
