You might be interested in having a squint at Episode 1 of the BBC series 'Art of France' as it includes a short but interesting view of the 144 model towns made for Louis XIV :

Definitely - might have to use 1mm figures and be suspended over the table in some form of mobile hammock but it would be worth it !
