Wanted: details of Spanish horse regt c.1680

Hi,

Can anyone provide me with uniform/horse furniture/flag details for the Duke of Osuna's cavalry (not dragoon) regiment that served at Tangiers briefly in 1680-83? I believe that the coats were off white/light grey, and the hats were a similar light colour, but I have nothing more on facings, horse furniture.

One of our Spanish members, Chema1986, did supply a picture in a sculpting thread, but it was via photobucket and has thus gone the way of all flesh.

Thanks.

I have a soft copy of "The Spanish Armies in the War of the League of Augsburg" by GianCarlo Boeri, Jose Luis Mirecki & Jose Palau.

This provides a picture of the Osuna Cavalry Regiment (which, I think, is the one included in Chema1986's post).

The description is as follows :

Light grey/white coat, cuffs & hat lace. Red saddle cloth & pistol cover - both with white border.

Please PM me if you want a soft copy of the above document - very much recommended.

Thank you, that was all I needed, except to ask did they wear cuirasses in 1680?

I'm looking to include it as part of a "Tangiers Garrison" army for a FoGR competition next February.

>>>did they wear cuirasses in 1680?

It sounds as though they did. The above source includes the following :

"Until the mid 1680's cuirassiers and lancers wore breast and back plates, or at least the breastplate..."

Hi there, Yes sadly all my photobucket pics are gone... I´m working on a new method... sorry for the late answer, yes all the info provided by Glorfindel is right. Happy painting and show us pics of your horsemen!

Cheers

I have some doubts. I have that ebook also, and while it does say that until the 1680s cuirassiers and lancers wore breast and back plates, it is not referring uniquely to the Osuna regiment but rather generically. There may also been regiments called Cuirassiers that were no longer wearing them in the War of the League of Augsburg.

However during the War of the League of Augsburg 1688-97, the Milan Cavalry (white coat and blue cuffs) did wear the lobster helmet and a cuirass.

I'll be painting this unit up myself soon. I'm not including breastplates, it was probably to hot to wear them? Just my thoughts?

Hi Ray,
You may be right, is too hot there, but the Moors used more cold steel weapons and armor than their Europeans counterparts I believe, so my countrymen may have used their breastplates for defense against cavalry lances or swords... both posibilities are right for me !
