Good evening all
I'm looking to game the battle of Sedgemoor and was wondering if anyone has dabbled in this and would be able to point me in the right direction for figures (28mm) Royal Army James 11 and the Dukes Rebels, any specific packs from Barry's figure range would be great. I have some reference material, but do osprey do anything from their range of books. Any help would be greatly received.
Regards
Nick

These will be perfect for Monmouth’s troops and most of the regular troops in the shop on this site are perfect for the Royalists troops.

I have fought Sedgemoor Campaign several times, using as a basis a couple of old articles from Military Modelling mag and maybe Practical Wargaming mag from years back

Military Modelling December 1981, Battle of Sedgemoor by Stuart Asquith in Battles for Wargamers series

Practical Wargamer or Military Modelling (sorry no date ) Prelude to Sedgemoor, action at Norton St Phillip by I Kenton

suggested sources
Armies &Uniforms of Monmouth rebellion by Chris Scott Partizan Press
Days of King Monmouth by Ralph Mitchard
Sedgemoor 1685 by John Whiles
Dorset & Somerset Rebellion by K Merle Chacksfield
Monmouth Episode by Bryan Little
Sedgemoor 1685 by David Chandler
Western Rising by Charles Chenevix Trench
Monmouth's rebels by Peter earle
Monmouth Rebellion by Robert Dunning
Sedgemoor 1685 by John Tincey

hope that's helps, Cheers Old John

Also suggest that some English Civil War figures can be used for Monmouth's troops as well as Royalist troops. Various British Army regimental websites can provide uniform details eg Kirke's lambs/Tangier Regiment

Thanks for the fantastic replies, plenty for me to look into. I have been thinking of leaving my gaming comfort zone for many years from the usual ww2 and delving into this fantastic period, living in Bristol and only a 5 minutes walk from the Keynsham old bridge and then spending most weekends in and around Lyme Regis what more motivation do I need. Once again thanks chaps.

The battle of Sedgemoor itself is quite difficult to turn into a good game, as it was fairly one-sided, and it is difficult to get away from that fact without making one side ahistorically strong, or the other ahistorically weak. That said, if you play one side and have the other controlled by an umpire, or limiting its options and choosing them with die rolls, it is possible to see if you can do better than the historical players. The large skirmish at Norton St Phillip's is actually more interesting, with the Government forces becoming trapped in the centre of the town and having to escape by hacking their way through garden hedges and fences. Any good history of the rebellion should give you units and approximate numbers for both forces - some friends and I put this on as a game at Salute back in the 1990s (I think in one of the Olympia years).

How would you base a unit of mommouths troops for blb
I base my nine years war troops on 4x60x60 bases.1 x pike base 2x musketeer bases and i command base.
Due to the make up of monmouths u its i,m not sure how to set up a unit.

Maybe 2 pikes due to lack of muskets? I'm assuming as it was a rebel force it would be poorly supplied in military grade equipment unless they managed to raid depots along the way? I think the battle was a total destruction so probably very little fire arms and training.

You could use a scenario where Monmouth did surprise James II's forces and maybe if some of the West Country's Militia regts joined him, my own bases for Monmouth's rebels have a mix of figures with, pikes, muskets, pitchforks and scythes, all on the same base, also if you want to expand your project into this period 1685-1691 the Royalist forces can be used for the Jacobite wars in Ireland and Scotland, and possibly recycle Monmouth's Rebels as Irish, possibilities are endless :)

book
General Percy Kirke and the Later Stuart Army by John Childs ( who has written many other titles covering the period)

Many thanks to lee and john for their suggestions.think johns idea of mixing the bases with musketeers pikemen and scythe men sounds good as this would give it a ragged sort of appearence compared to the royalist army.
Once again gentlemen thank you for your advice.
