DH Early War

Post by barr7430 » Thu Aug 16, 2007 11:05 pm

Big Gazza & I had a great 'Dunkirk' game tonite.

I used a full German grenadier platoon with 1 x 8cm mortar but no HMG support plus
2 x PzIVB (crappy armour!)
3 x PzIIF

Gary used:

Brits:

Capt Cholmondley Warner

4 British Rifle sections
3 x Bren sections
1 x 3" mortar section
Platoon command
1 x Vickers HMG

French:

Colonel de Gaulle
2 x R35
2 x 25mm AT guns
2 x 75mm 1897 Field guns
2 x Hotchkiss HMGs

The scenario was based on a rearguard action by the Allies to protect the beach head area.
We played about 8-10 turns. German casualties were 19 dead/wounded including one MkIV knocked out by a 75mm field gun and a MkII knocked out by DeGaulle himself. His own R35 was hit three times but every shell failed to penerate.
Allied casualties amounted to over 50 dead/wounded, one R35 knocked out by a MkIV, and all but one of the French support weapons (a 25mm AT gun) destroyed. The Germans did not managed to exit the beach side of the board so we called it an honourable draw despite the high disparity in casualties.

If managed well, German squad fire is awesome. The early war equipment was a refreshing change and I really enjoyed it!
Don't know about Gary

Hi,
it was a great game. Lates face at early or late war the German squad fire power is deadly.

The tank combat was much better. Armour is slightly better than the anti tank guns in early war so it was a bit of a gamble to see if the armour was penetrated. With most of the late war tanks, if it hit the armour has no chance. Nice change for the allied player.

And I'm not going to go into the skill of the french gunners.

What skill

You of course did forget Pepe Le Phew.... sole surviving crew member of the 75mm field gun who single handedly took out a MkIVB!! Bravo Monsieur!!... then got toasted for his trouble

I have a hankering to get the Poles out for a ruck with the Wehrmacht!

By the way... bought the DH WWI rules.. Price of Glory AND I already have a few
Austro-Hungarians
Germans painted for WW1!!!

Maybe I'll do some trenches!

Speaking of temptation. My Spanish Civil War supplement for DH arrived this morning. Anarchist Militia with an Acc and Guts of 4 and no sergeants - now that will be a challenge.

November Issue... SPANISH CIVIL WAR SPECIAL  Pat, hoping you are getting this!....
They say it's one of the best they have ever done!

So.. LOW ACCURACY ANARCHIST RIFLEMEN UNSUPPORTED BY SERGEANTS probably + German, Russian, British,American etc etc volunteers, priests, Spanish Fascists, Monarchists, Proto-Neo Con Post Modernists   ... we will need a PhD in Political Sciences and a lecture before the first dice are rolled
Swot up on it and give us the Daily Mirror version Pat

Hi,
as it happens I've just picked up Antony Beevors book on the SCW. I may join you when I've read it.

Well when you've read it and your brain has solidified again we'll talk about the SCW. I like Beevor's writing style but the extremely complicated politics of the SCW will seriously mess with your sanity
By about page 150 I was in need of counselling

Hi,
I've read Stalingrad. Great book. At the moment I know very little about the SCW other than the other powers getting involved. Looking forward to the book.

Incidentally, my super tight 1984 type censorship has prevented the word
s-e -x coming up in the previous post!!

Now I have to see if this post got past my OWN censorship!
