Average combat distance?

Hi,
recently me and a couple of friends had a discussion concerning average combat distances during WWII and we realized that we had no idea what we were talking about. Has there been any work published (preferably on the internet) concerning such an issue. I am aware that answers to this will be very dependant on terrain, weather etc. Does anyone here know if this kind of information is available in book form or elsewhere.
