LOA Fitzjames Horse?

Post by nick the greek » Sun May 20, 2012 12:36 am

As I eagerly anticipate the arrival of my LOA army from Dixon. I am slowly deciding on what horse squadrons to paint? I would like a variation of uniforms and colour, so was thinking cuirassier Du Roi, line (grey with red cuffs), and Fitzjames if they were in existence in this period?
Having gone through my WI Matk Allen articles I couldn't find any reference to them.

Hello Nick,

I'm no expert in these matters but it is possible they used to be known as "Sheldon's Horse" before they became "Fitzjames's".

This era is fascinating but identifying/tracing regiments can be very confusing as they went by the name of the current colonel rather than by a fixed name AND the surnames of these men crop up all over the place, even in armies on opposing sides as well as amongst allies!

Good Luck!

The Hall CDs show a different uniform for this period. Jim, I believe that you may have painted the WAS/SYW uniform and saddlecloth. But I guess in the long run it doesn't matter as long as you're happy with them.

What Hall shows is red coat, red cuffs, buff pants, silver buttons and red saddlecloth with yellow border. Tricorne has white trim with black cockade. This all based of the Lemau findings.

Here is a link to how mine were painted to match what the Hall CD show:

Currently I'm painting a squadron of Warfare new cavalry as Nugents/Fitzjames. The coats are red with red cuffs, buff waistcoats and pants.
My real question now is what colour is the musician's coat?

Interesting topic :)

As I understand it, this regiment was originally part of James II's army in exile and was formed in September 1691 as the Roi d'Angleterre. It was led by Domenick Sheldon. In 1698 it was merged with the Queens regiment and became the regiment of Sheldon as part of the French army.
In 1706 it became the regiment Nugent under the Comte de Nugent.

It seems that the blue cuffs and red coat was the uniform from 1735 and prior to that the coat was red with red cuffs, although several uniform books for the WSS show blue cuffs. The reference to the red cuffs is from 1730 so before that is not known for sure.

The flag was red with a golden sun on one side and an eagle on the other with the the motto "torn off". This may have referred to the loss of James's crown. This would have been the flag from when the regiment joined the French army. Maybe the eagle and motto could have pre dated that but the golden sun is the symbol of Louis XIV. Maverick models do a nice version of the flag. I think the GMB one is from the SYW.

Now the trumpeter livery, unfortunately there is no reference to that at all
so it's up to you. It would usually be the livery of the colonel in a non royal or provincial regiment.

Best wishes,
Simon

I seem to vaguely recall, from Sapherson, that Fitzjames took command of one of the troops (which were actually squadron sized) of the King's Lifeguard of Horse for the campaign in Ireland.

Note, I haven't been drinking but am stuck at work away from said book so this could be nonsense.

At the beginning of the campaign, and once the troops were mounted, Dover took the 1st Troop of Lifeguards, whilst Berwick took the 2nd Troop. Possibly around this time (if not earlier) John Parker moved from the Horse Grenadiers to command his own regiment.
