Here I go

Post by Artimas » Mon Jun 02, 2014 9:38 pm

Just received my RtE in the mail. My only question is: will I live long enough to read through the rules? (Just kidding!)

One serious question tho: do the current edition of the rules contain all the errata, etc., or are there further changes that I need to know about?

The only major change I can think of was to do with the artillery rules because we found they were too powerful in combat and receiving casualties. Barry did produce an amendment but I'm not sure where it is but I'm sure he will reply when he gets back from his travels.

Hi Artimas,

here is the official amendment:

viewtopic.php?f=17&t=3809

It was only printed on paper for the last Napoleonic Game I played at Derby.

Hope that helps,

Günter

Well done on finding the artillery rules Gunter.

The FIBA has been changed slightly in that the attacker re-rolls all hits to determine the winner as a number of people thought that the defenders were having too much trouble trying to defend against heavy numbers.

There was also a long discussion about regimental guns and their effect but I can't remember if we came to a final decision about them.
Too many people were just using them to swivel and target enemy units that weren't even threatening the regiment they were attached to on the hope of causing a casualty and then a morale test.
Cheers

One last question: I am on page 32 of the rulebook and I have seen the
word "outwith" used several times so far. Now, I consider myself relatively literate and I have read English literature or rather literature written in the English language for many years, but I have never run
across this word. I had no idea what it meant. So the Webster dictionary
defines the meaning as "outside" and is Scottish first used in the 12th century .I'm really not trying to be critical, but why was this obscure word used so often?
Do the English use this word in everyday conversation? I wonder. I also wonder if is in common use in Scotland?

Hi Artimas,

Well, I have to say that I use the word fairly frequently and hear it in conversation as well, but I live in the West of Scotland, as does Barry, so it may be common to us here.

Dave O'Brien might chip in if it's any different in the East of Scotland( which knowing him it probably will be!!!! :-) ) Actually, he thinks we're from a foreign country!!! Lol

Cheers

You may call it sarcasm........I, on the other hand, prefer to refer to it as a humorous observation!!! :-)

Artimas,

just returned from my travels but it looks as if the lads are looking after you fine. 8)

On the subject of outwith I make no apology. It is common proper English where I live. I refuse to bow to the conventions of international English or American English as they are not my language. Artimas I salute your common sense.. you looked it up. I do that frequently with words I do not understand. Language dumbing down makes the world a less interesting, less enquiring and generally more homogeneous place- I subscribe to none of these trends.

Barry:

No apologies needed! :D I just found it most interesting, that's all. And besides, I learned a new word! As an aside, I find Scottish totally baffling. I remember watching a Premier League match in which the co-anchor was a Scot. I simply could not understand a word he said the entire match! I wonder how many folks south of the border understand the Scots either? But that's a topic for another day.

All the best:
