Queen Anne's War

Post by Bernhard » Tue Jun 24, 2014 12:02 pm

I have been gaming WSS in Europe for some time now and am interested in expanding into the Americas but have some questions? Did Queen Anne's War involve skirmishes only or were there some larger battles which would have involved linear tactics? Are there any sources on orders of battle and uniforms? How were Native Americans armed at this time? Any help would be very much appreciated.

There were some larger battles and sieges in North America during Queen Anne's War. Think for example of the siege of St Augustine, Florida in 1702, the siege and capture of Port Royal (now Annapolis) on Nova Scotia in 1710. The attempt to capture Port Royal in 1707 was also pretty conventional.
The number of troops involved was of course small. For Port Royal 1707, the expedition from New England numbered two regiments, about 1,200 men in total.

Much of the warfare was the border fighting thing: skirmishes, (long range) reconnaissance raids, and pillaging/burning. For this, think of anything between 20 and 200 men. Troops involved were mostly colonial soldiers / provincials, levied from the militia, often augmented by allied natives.

By coincidence, I intend to bring out a book on this topic this autumn :D : http://drenthpublishing.nl/colonialsold ... diers.html.
