League Of Augsburg - Fighting Talk

Currently using my holiday time to pull together the skeleton of the Crimean amendments to R2E. Clarence and I have discussed a timeline and it will probably be the next piece of work we bring out. It is not a new set of rules but will work in conjunction with the existing R2E book. It will contain all necessary modifications on organization, command, formations, movement, shooting and resolve. It will have a substantial section on unit organization and uniforms.
Working title is FOUR EMPIRES

Sounds absolutely fantastic .

Very much looking forward to this. All I need to do now is paint up two armies and find a Crimean playmate .

Well if you just paint one army, the Russians, you can take on my French at the club any time your back in Edinburgh.

I'm going to do both Dave. Yep, a lot more painting but it's a section of history that has me buzzing and painting the British, French and Turkish uniforms would be the ideal antidote tom painting all those Russians in different greys etc.

I'd love to pop up to SESWC if there's anything Crimean going on at all man ami .

I know you're a VERY busy man but do you have an update for us on this project? Who has the best figures available for the Crimean War?

Have you thought of breaking out into the Franco-Prussian War? As a side note all of the 28mm FPW figures available are seriously limited in availability, poses, and just overall scope. Maybe a new figure opportunity?

The project is well under way but has had a little service interruption due to Katya! Clarence has been putting the Eastern Seaboard back to gether with crazy glue

The text is pretty much written. Cover art started and I am sure Clarence will do his usual tantalizing updates here somewhere as he progresses. The biggest section of the supplement is not in fact the rule amendments but a very extensive uniform, painting and organization guide covering all combatants. That is taking the time but will be finished shortly.

The photography is WiP and I have access to some spectacular collections for this book.

As for figure ranges, well the range produced for Foundry by the Perry's still stands out as truly one of their finest hours. Supplement that with figures from the Indian Mutiny, Sikh Wars, Opium Wars (British) ranges and the Mexican Adventure and Franco Prussian War (For the French/ Sardinians) and the Sudan (Modern Perry) for the Turks and you get a huge choice of figures for 'High Victorian' . In terms of newer ranges the new Great War Miniatures Crimean stuff is very nice. I particularly like their personalities and officers.. Sir Colin Campbell (mounted) is gem.

So, no shortage of high quality figures.
As you'll see when the book comes out, the armies are far more evenly matched than in Napoleonic times.. gone are Wellington's invincible redcoats. If anything, the under rated French, shine brightest as overall professional, manoeuvrable and consistent.
Less cavalry, more columns, lots of forts, big units, poor quality leadership, sailors, big guns and mortars and lots of bayonets.... oh and moustaches, lots and lots of moustaches

I would hope that we could get this book out by Christmas...

Thank you for the update! Looking forward to it.

I also forgot to mention that Dave O Brien and I have looked reasonably closely at Russian Napoleonic Jager in fatgue caps and they can be used as Russian infantry for the Crimea unless there is a Raid by the WFP!

That has boosted our Russian numbers by about 100 figures!

Hurricane Irene caused all of the trouble... I have been (and still am) on 12-hour shifts, seven days a week (although it was announced that we get ONE day of the upcoming weekend off and then it's back to 12's). It's dark when I leave my home and dark when I return.

Before this carnage, I did manage to get the cover sketch finished...

I actually started the painting, and I'll post the next step on my blog when I can show some progress. I have many of the charts (one of the most time consuming aspect of the layout process) finished and around half of the chapters roughed in. There are several interior illos finished and a few more in my sketchbook.

One of these days, life will return to normal and I'll be far more productive!

I know I've asked before but any thoughts on an R2E supplement for the Franco-Prussian War and/or Austro-Prussian War? My preference is the FPW if you were to ask.

Greg... Dave O'B is more of a FPW man than I, he would know where the - were in R2E Crimea relative to FPW. Maybe the ACW version is more applicable though.... Dave has seen that too
