Suitable Rules for Crimea

Post by thinredline » Mon Mar 20, 2006 6:59 pm

Given the success of your Napoleonic Rules with the L.OG.W., and the likelihood we will be gaming Crimean action at some point in the not too distant future, I would propose that we use these rules for that period of warfare.

Would you change anything in particular, or jst go with the rules as is :?:

I think putting our heads together to create a wee Crimean supplement would be good 8)
All firing and combat mechanisms as written.

I think we should re assess troop quality, formations, artillery(the very heavy guns), rifles and possibly Turkish Irregular cavalry.

I suppose the eccentricities, downright ineptitude and sheer brilliance (of a limited few) of some predominantly British Commanders can be adequately covered by Command ability dice at the outset, and a distinctive flavour to the wild cards at each turn

I should hate to see Lord Raglan order an attack upon the French, only to see his incompetent Staff carry it through

I shall get busy

Gentlemen, (and Ladies)
It should come as no surprise that my collection of Crimean Wargaming Figures continues to expand. My only regret is that I am now outsourcing painting services abroad to achieve a painting standard (sometimes in excess of my own) to bolster the completion of the ever growing volume of unpainted lead

My forte has never been the use and implemetation of "Rulests"
I have always relied upon the inherent honesty and common sense of my fellow wargamers, and their interpretation of any ruleset being used. To this end, I am indebted to my fellow wargamers :D

I have been fortunate to acquire a substantial volume of lead from Graham Robertson (of the Glasgow Wargames Club" and he has kindly suggested the use of Fire an Fury as a reasonable Rulset for use in this theatre :D

As an alternative , WI Nos 230 + 231 carried "From the Black Sea to the Baltic" by Mark Shearwood. 8)

Both rulesets will have to be tested in relation to the Crimea, as my good friend Dave O'Brien points out, the world was changing in 1854, but the technological differences were of little difference in the field for troops actively engaged in the Crimea 8)

Reports will feedback here - and not thro "The Times"
We have not yet taken Sevastopal, let alone the Malakoff"

Bob, my decision to keep most of my Crimean collection now seems like the right one. You and I can playtest F&F and my own Naps rules with amendments whenever you are available. It would be good to get dates in the diary in advance for me because of my antisocial business life  s
I can currently supply

5 x 24 figure russian battalion
2 x 18 figure russian naval battalions
6 x russian 6pdrs
1 x 40 figure russian uhlan regiment
12 Russian skirmishers

1 x 24 figure French Battalion
1 x 18 figure Black Watch
2 x Turkish 32 pdrs?
1 x Turkish infantry battalion
3 x British heavy mortars
1 x British understrength Guards battalion
1 x British understrength line battalion
2 x 95th rifle companies (8 figures)

Unpainted lead: about 150 castings

Alas all of the rest of it went west............

Mmmm, :)

This might take some time to enummerate, but I'll have a review of the troops and get back to you before the weekend is over. 8)

The unpainted lead stockpile was being eroded, but it keeps filling up again due to my "compulsive and acquisitive" behaviour.
Or am I just "mad" :?:

Play testing - sounds like a good idea. My calendar is pretty free, with only tentative committments to the show dates next year and of course LOGW. I shall purchase a copy of Fire + Fury forthwith, heavens, I might even read them

Bob, have you looked at 'The Thin Red Streak' wargames rules for field actions in the Crimean War by Stephen Allen?

I haven't played them myself but if you would like to see them I could bring them along to the next LoGW weekend, you're most welcome to borrow them. As for Crimean figures, I have mentioned in the past that my main interest has always been Turks so I might be tempted to paint a few battalions if needed, the plus side is that I could always use them as Egyptians in winter uniforms for my Egyptian Revolt/Early Sudan games. Greeks would be another interesting force to put together but other than at Evpatoria did they fight elsewhere?

Cheers

DAVE,

Certainly interested in the Ruleset, as mentioned, I am a lazy "b" when it comes to rules, but it gives us another option for playtesting prior to the LOGW in 2009, many thatnks if you can bring em along to our Nov Bash at the Airlie. :D

Kind regards

Well, not all of it is painted though, but I am trying (so is Fernando Enterprises) Cossacks and Rifles on the table at the mo. (Bob painting again)

If you take the cavalry as two castings, about 5000 pieces now split 2300 Wussians, and 2700 allies. Its heavy on artillery and cavalry - but heck - where would "Kellerman" be without a horse, or two

The unpainted volume never seems to diminish :o , even though the painted ranks are swelling :D

Given the period in question I would be interetsed if the rules you are considering would adapt also to the Indian Mutiny 1856-1857.

Barry , any thoughts. More small scale skirmish than large battles with a lot of fighting within city walls.

Dear Thin Red Line,

Am I right in thinking your figures for the Crimea are Foundry 25mms?

Do you know if Eureka do 25mm for this era?

Did you ever get a good enough set of rules to cover your big units?

Do you base in elements?
