I have finished blocking in the unit of French militia I am doing for the painting competition except for one thing I have no idea what colour to do the officers sashes & whilst they are a made up unit I am assuming that the officers at least would attempt to ape the appearance of the regulars. The only problem is I believe these would have been white & white on mucky silver grey gives very little contrast.
suggestions please chaps

i can't offer any historical advice since i dont know what i'm talking about
but i had to do similar recently. I made the sashes white and they did stand out reasonably well - but you have to make the grey quite grey and the white quite white. Does that make sense ? maybe (since these are militia) make the coats weathered and muddy and the sashes brilliant persil clean ?

mainly white sashes. You'd be surprised how they stand out even against other whites

Historical answer : white sashes for the lot, yes.
One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got into my pajamas I'll never know.
