The Road to Perdition III

Heer, Heer!
Well, seeing that there is a new set of rules by Warlord Games called Bolt Action coming out, I thought I might get into some Early War Germans:
Cavalry Front
Cavalry Rear
Infantry to follow. The above are from the Crusader Miniatures range. And yes... I still intend to finish my Louis XIV and Napoleonic Froggies but variety is the spice of life.
Regards,
Jim

Jim,
Nice Germans you have painted there. Cant wait to see more of them
Ray,
they are 28mm metal miniatures. I'm quite sure you know that allready but in case others doesn't...: The German's used Cavalry (Divisions), mainly in Russia and the Balkan like the 8.SS Cavalry Divisions Florian Geyer.
Mounted Soldiers were also used in the Recon units of the Infantry Division.
Best Wishes,
Günter

They had two cavalry divisions early on in the war which took part in the Polish and Dutch invasions, plus German horse drawn transport actually increased as the war went on.

You are quite right Dave
At the start of the war the German Army counted about 560.000 Horses in use. Most of them to draw supply and artillery trains. 1940 the numbers rose to 770.000 while at the beginning of the War in the East there were over 1 Million, that makes 119 Horse-drawn Infantry Divisions or 88% of the German Divisions.
I love Jim's idea to start with such an uncommon German Army unit like the mounted troops. Well done.
Ray,
My appologies, just looked at the Website of Crusader Miniatures and found out myself
I ment the sort of use of Horses in the German Army

Jim, I have an excellent book on the German cavalry 'Will we see tomorrow? A German Cavalryman at War 1939-42' by Max Kuhnert which is basically his diary during the war with some great personal pics and there is also 'The Cavalry 1939-45' by janusz Piekalkiewicz which covers the Poles, Germans, French, Russian, Brits and Americans as well as a few other nationalities. It's mostly a pictorial history with some fantastic pics. Should you wish to borrow them we could make some arrangement to get them to you.
Cheers
Dave

Gentlefolk,
Thanks for the kind comments.
Ray,
They are indeed 28mm metal and I intended to use them to scout ahead of my main force to avoid it getting shot up too soon.
Günter,
As you have possibly gathered, this lot are Bavarians...
painted in your honour. My ex Mother-in-Law was from Munchen and probably commanded a Panzer Division in the last war. We argued a lot about my kids: I wanted them to go to College or University... she wanted them to invade Poland.
Dave,
I will certainly take you up on that offer so. thank you very much in advance. I have just received a wee packet of 12 infantry from Warlord games and will start painting them over the weekend.
Regards and thanks to all,
Jim

Kind Regards,

Ray,
It was once phrased as, "How many wives have you had?" to which I replied, "Including my own?".
I am definitely almost back to my old irreverent self. Further to Günter's point about German Cavalry: in 1939, every German Division had a compliment of 216 Cavalry (for some reason it was called a battalion) for scouting purposes, hence my wee German unit above.
Good to talk to you again, Ray.

The Infantry So Far
Rauchen Encouraged
Only a dozen but getting there. I like the way Bolt Action slip in the characters like the chap above enjoying a wee cigarette after ruining the paintwork on a French tank.
If anyone wishes, I'll post a few closer shots.
